The sketch, this first trace that I consider as an artwork
Sketching has always accompanied my painting.
Before the canvas.
Before the color.
Sometimes even before the final idea itself.
There is this rapid line.
A posture.
A seated silhouette.
A walk through a street.
A body within space.
I create these sketches with a dip pen, ink, black ballpoint pen or graphite. They often emerge very quickly. Sometimes in just a few minutes. Yet within this immediacy, something already begins to appear.
Human balance.
Presence.
The silence of a posture.
For a long time, the sketch was seen merely as a preparatory step. Yet when one looks at the history of art, it becomes clear that it is far more than that.

Urban Pause is a sketch created from a contemporary bench located in the central square of the village of Duingt, facing Lake Annecy.
It holds an important place in my artistic journey, as it comes from a walk I return to regularly, a place that brings me a deeply personal and enduring source of inspiration.

Some sketches are born from longer moments, when the posture allows me to capture a deeper sense of expression and human presence.
Egon Schiele left behind drawings of extraordinary intensity. Some of his works on paper possess an even more direct force than his paintings.
Gustav Klimt drew every day. His studies are now sought after throughout the world for their freedom and intimacy.
Whenever I look at certain sketches by Pablo Picasso or Edgar Degas, I always feel this particular closeness to the artist’s thought process. Drawing often reveals the exact moment when an artwork begins to exist.
That is precisely what moves me about sketching.
It does not seek to impress.
It remains close to the original gaze.
In my own work, many paintings find their origin in these rapid drawings. A sketch may later become a large-scale canvas. It may also remain autonomous and exist entirely on its own.
I deeply believe that a collector can begin a collection through sketches.
An original sketch remains a unique artwork.
It carries the artist’s hand.
Sometimes the hesitation.
Its immediate energy.

The sketch often releases the emotional attachment of a moment, that instantaneity which takes shape like a silent visual magic.
There is also a more intimate relationship with a work on paper. Its format integrates naturally into an interior. It enters into dialogue with the architecture without overwhelming it.
Collecting a sketch also means entering the studio.
Seeing the origin of the painting.
Understanding how a posture becomes a work of paint.
Some of the sketches presented on my website are directly connected to existing artworks. The collector can therefore follow a path:
the sketch → the painting → sometimes the limited edition art print
This continuity feels important to me.
It tells the story of the artwork through time.
Today, I want to give the sketch the place it deserves within my work. Not as a secondary study, but as a work in its own right.
Perhaps a quieter work.
But often one that remains very close to what is essential.

Un croquis qui a initié une oeuvre sur toile : Pacifique - 80 × 80 cm
This sketch initiated a series composed of three artworks: The Bus Stop. An inexhaustible theme centered on human posture within a moment of waiting. The attitudes vary constantly, and the surrounding spaces are always different.
He stands there, solid and unmoving,
like a quiet island amidst the waves of life.
His neon jacket lights up the scene with an unexpected glow,
while his gaze lost on the horizon
reveals the serene simplicity of those who move forward without noise.

Artistic approach
In "PACIFIQUE," I sought to capture the calm strength of an ordinary yet striking figure.
Behind the colorful outfit and slightly offbeat appearance lies profound humanity —
the kind that doesn't need embellishment to fully exist in the moment.
The thick hedge, smooth pavement, and contrasting colors emphasize this balance between the world's extravagance and inner grounding.

This sketch later evolved into an acrylic painting on canvas measuring 80 × 80 cm. Its title emerged naturally, like an imaginary first name completing the expectations of a carefully staged scene.

Sketches offer a discreet way of integrating art into an interior. Once framed with a mat border, they take on an elegant and balanced presence.
Their format allows for the creation of a narrative arrangement on a wall, in a hallway, an office, a library or a more intimate space. Several sketches can enter into dialogue with one another, create a visual rhythm and accompany the architecture without dominating it.
This more flexible installation also allows a collection to evolve over time, through successive additions built around the same sensitivity or the same vision of human posture.
