An Artistic Path Built Over Time
EN
As a contemporary figurative painter, Alain Rouschmeyer develops a body of work centered on the human figure and its relationship to space.
Initially trained in architecture, he approaches painting with a constructed gaze, attentive to lines, volumes, and postures. Drawing, practiced daily, forms the foundation of his work and accompanies each stage of the pictorial process.
This path unfolds within an artistic approach in which architecture, drawing, and painting are in constant dialogue.
Training and Influences
Alain Rouschmeyer first trained in fine arts at the Beaux-Arts de Metz, before continuing his studies at the École des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg and later at the École du Rhin.
In Strasbourg, he encountered a demanding academic education in which drawing, the study of the figure, and the construction of the gaze held a central place. This rigorous approach established a lasting relationship to time, observation, and the precision of line.
Attention to human posture, to the balance of bodies, and to their inscription within space became a foundational element of his work. Drawing is not a means, but a place of thought.
He later completed this path with studies at the École nationale supérieure d’architecture de Lyon. This training deepened his understanding of built space, structure, and composition, and reinforced an architecturally informed reading of reality.
Between fine arts and architecture, his work is shaped by a dual discipline: that of the slow gaze and that of construction. Influences are never claimed as models, but absorbed as working principles, gradually integrated into a personal practice over time.
Artistic Approach
To look, to observe, to feel.
It is from this attentive relationship to reality that the work of Alain Rouschmeyer takes shape. Rooted in an architectural background, his practice seeks to understand the movement of the human body within given spaces, and to grasp the subtle relationship between a posture and the place that receives it.
The simplicity of a pose—sometimes almost incidental—is enough to reveal the presence of a passage. A body settles, a space opens. Nothing is demonstrative. What matters is this silent encounter between the human figure and its environment, whose meanings are never entirely given.
Painting then explores zones of tension: interior and exterior, presence and absence, fullness and emptiness. These oppositions are not treated as effects, but as perceptual states that shape our way of seeing. Space may become a setting or recede, support the figure or leave it alone, facing itself. Time does not unfold in a linear manner; it operates through cycles, returns, and reprises, like a memory in motion.
Sketching occupies an essential place in this approach. It captures the instant, fixes a posture, outlines an idea without ever freezing it. From these fragments emerges a figurative painting in which reality and imagination intersect, without hierarchy, within a deeply human approach.
Composition, finally, engages the body within the very space of the canvas. Format is never neutral: it contributes to the presence of the subject and to its inscription within the surface. Between classicism and timelessness, the work invites a form of inner wandering, akin to a silent walk in which one loses oneself in order to find oneself again. It is this suspended moment that painting seeks to hold.
