LES AMOUREUX DE LA VIEILLE VILLE (The lovers of the old town) - 50 x 50 cm

1 350,00 €

The Lovers of the Old Town…
They walk side by side, carried by a shared rhythm, in the soft light of a familiar city.
Their bodies tell the story of time better than faces do: an unhurried pace, a hand held, the continuity of a shared step.
Between architecture and human presence, the work reveals an ordinary yet profound love, rooted in the simplest gestures of everyday life.

About the Artwork

The Lovers of the Old Town is a contemporary figurative painting depicting an elderly couple walking hand in hand through an old urban setting.
Rather than describing a specific scene, the work seeks to convey a way of inhabiting time, through human posture, shared steps, and the continuity of gesture.

Seen from behind, the bodies move forward without haste. Their walk tells the story of a relationship built over time, shaped by habits, silences, and a mutual presence that has become essential. The held hand is neither demonstrative nor symbolic; it is a support, a natural extension of the other’s body, a discreet bond inscribed in everyday life.

The architecture of the old town, intentionally restrained and non-specific, acts as a framework of memory. It evokes the places passed through over the years, the cities lived in, the familiar streets that accompany ordinary life. The urban landscape does not dominate the scene; it supports the human presence, revealing the intimate relationship between built space and the trajectory of the bodies.

In this work, Alain Rouschmeyer continues a line of research centered on human posture and silent narration. The figure is not idealized, but inhabited. Old age is not treated as a subject, but as a natural state of the bond, where fragility and solidity coexist without contradiction.

The Lovers of the Old Town forms part of a contemporary figurative approach attentive to lasting human relationships, to walking as a metaphor for long time, and to love experienced as a discreet companionship.
The work addresses a slow gaze, sensitive to ordinary scenes of life, and to those who recognize, in the simplicity of a gesture, the depth of a shared history.
