She is Camille; he is the lake, with its mineral setting revealing the stones on the bottom and the little perches disturbed by the swimmer’s arrival. It’s a scene I love to observe every summer, with its special ritual—a somewhat tricky access point, which varies from year to year depending on the water level. Standing on the shore, I drew every detail of this choreography and worked from a preliminary sketch, which allowed me to create the acrylic painting on canvas, 120 x 120 cm, entitled “The Girl by the Lake.”
This contemporary figurative work captures the posture of the young woman at the very start of her swim—those precious moments spent gauging the water’s temperature and gradually claiming the space, if only for a few strokes. It’s a figurative piece representing a human figure in a natural, mineral and aquatic environment.
